One question that some athletes find themselves asking as they go about their workout program is what the best time of the day to workout is.
Is there a certain time when you will perform better than others?
There are a few things that you do need to take into consideration when answering this question correctly, so let’s look at what these are so that you can get assured you’re working out properly.
What Type Of Exercise Are You Doing?
The very first thing to look at is what type of exercise you’re doing. If you’re doing aerobic training, this can be done at almost any time of the day without too much difficulty. As long as you are someone who can get themselves out of bed in the morning, you should find that you have no problem performing your cardio workout sessions.
Weight training on the other hand can be a different story. Since weight training relies on the central nervous system far more than basic cardio does, first thing in the morning your CNS may be slightly sluggish from the night of sleep. As a result, you may find that you feel ‘slow’ in the gym and unable to produce the normal amount of strength that you usually do.
This does vary from person to person though – some people are fine doing weight lifting first thing in the morning, so you’ll have to try for yourself and see how you do. If you do find that your strength is low though, chances are you would be better off performing this mid to late afternoon.
What’s Your Lifestyle Like?
The second thing to consider is what your schedule is like. If you have a very active career that keeps you on your feet all day, you have to question whether the fatigue build-up you get from the day may influence your workout performance.
If so, then morning workouts will likely be the way to go. Even if you are feeling mentally sluggish, if you keep at it, your body should get used to it and it will still be superior to how you’d perform after a hard day of work.
If you are sedentary all day though, then you will likely have no problem completing your training after the day is done.
When Do You Perform Your Best?
Finally, the last thing to take into account is when do you perform your best. Each person will have their own person preference here and you must learn your own body.
Some people do great first thing in the morning. For others, it’s pure torture. Don’t listen to theory and completely ignore the messages your body is sending you. Workout when it’s best for you and only if you find it doesn’t matter, consider what ‘theory’ says.
Real world results are always what you should be going by.
So all in all, workout when you feel best but generally speaking, most people will find cardio is best first thing in the morning to get their day going and strength training is better later afternoon or in the evening.
